ROCKWHEEL Selection

ROCKWHEEL Selection - Transverse Cutting Unit Selection

Each unit has two cutting drums mounted on a transverse shaft driven either through a gear train, or directly, by a hydraulic motor powered and controlled from the excavator's auxiliary hydraulic circuit.

Advice is offered below to select the most appropriate transverse cutting unit for a specified duty, and illustrates their versatility using a number of interesting applications.

The starting point is an accurate assessment of the material, or materials, to be cut. This must include composition, abrasivity, strength and, in the case of rock, its bedding, dip, jointing, degree of fracturing, stability and local water regime.

Together with the scope of work, Webster Equipment Ltd can advise as to the most appropriate pick type, pick dressing, transverse cutting unit and excavator for the specified duty.

Cutting Drums:

  • Each transverse cutting unit has a matched pair of cutting drums typically dressed in a double helix pattern commencing on the end face of each drum. This optimises pick spacing and positioning for cutting efficiency, durability and debris removal and gives the required clearances for trenching.
  • Efficient cutting demands careful control of the excavator's digging motions to continuously advance the transverse cutting unit into the workface at the most advantageous orientation to optimise pick forces.

Picks are selected by their strength, profile and abrasive resistance:

  • Carbide tipped point attack picks are used to cut strong and abrasive materials such as rock and concrete.
  • Carbide tipped radial picks are better suited to weaker, more friable materials and tree stumps.

Experience and a detailed knowledge of the material, or materials, to be cut determines the required pick force, and hence transverse cutting unit model and the most appropriate excavator weight.

Cutting heads can also be supplied with water injection for dust suppression, or water jetting to assist cutting.

Transverse cutting units have established themselves as the ideal excavation attachment for cutting the hard materials encountered in the civil engineering and public works sectors. They have low operational noise and vibration transmission into the ground, improved excavation output when compared with other commonly accepted hard dig attachments, and can be controlled to cut an accurate profile.

The Current Range comprises of the following, however bespoke designs can be offered to suit customers requirements.
